13. Suffragette movement
Lancastrian Emmeline Pankhurst, who came from a prosperous family steeped in radical causes, was responsible for spearheading the Votes for Women campaign. 14. Electric street tramway
In 1885, Blackpool introduced the world’s first permanent electric street tramway. The first section opened on 29 September 1885, a conduit line from Cocker Street to Dean Street on Blackpool Promenade. 16. Mass Fingerprinting
Mass fingerprinting originated in Blackburn following a murder in May 1948. Police ordered a mass fingerprinting of all men over 16 in the Lancashire town of Blackburn to try and catch the person who had killed a three-year-old child. 18. Whiteboards
More than 20 years ago Blackburn-based firm Promethean invented a form of the interactive whiteboard, now seen in every school, hospital and office block in the world.
