Players and coaches at the Kingscote Park-based amateur club completed a charity challenge to run or cycle a total distance of 5,000 miles between them.

All proceeds were to be split equally between the Blue Skies Hospital Fund (the charity of Blackpool teaching hospitals) and the club itself.

Donations to their www.gofundme.com page exceeded Stanley’s target of £2,000 by close to £500, enabling the club to write out a cheque for £1,200 to Blue Skies.

Head coach Brett Whitehead said: “The lads wanted to come together to be active and raise money for the brilliant work of the NHS, and to make sure there is still a rugby club for us to play for by the end of it all.

“The fundraiser also helps players’ mental health by motivating them to get out and be active, which is very important within both the club and rugby league as a sport. A massive thank you to everyone who donated.”

Blackpool Stanley, who play in division five of the North West Men’s League, last year raised money for the State of Mind mental health charity by completing a 24-hour touch rugby match.

Donations are still welcome for Stanley’s latest fundraiser. Go to www.gofundme.com and search for ‘5,000 miles lockdown challenge’.
