Retained list: Fleetwood Town release 14 players

The list states Jordan and Matt will follow keeper Chris Maxwell, midfielder Antoni Sarcevic, ex-Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi and defender Danny Andrew through the exit door.

Maxwell has already sealed a move to Championship club Preston North End and Sarcevic is set to join Town’s League One rivals Shrewsbury Town whilst boss Steven Pressley revealed Ameobi and Andrew were leaving for ‘footballing reasons’ last month.

Former Burnley player Jordan signed for the club from Dunfermline in 2013 but he has not been offered a new contract.

The experienced defender made 70 appearances for the club and played a big part in Town’s successful survival bid after recovering from a hamstring injury to start the final nine games.

The 34-year-old’s defensive partner Nathan Pond’s contract is also up this summer but the club have offered him a new deal.

It is no surprise that Matt is leaving.

The striker joined from Kidderminster in 2013 but he missed the chunk of Town’s successful relegation fight as he spent the end of the campaign on-loan at defeated League Two play-off finalists Plymouth Argyle.

Town needed goals in the final run-in but after only netting three times for Steven Pressley’s men in 21 appearances he was shipped out to get first team football at Argyle.

Matt admitted he was at a low point when he joined Argyle but his strike ratio upped to a goal every two games as he scored seven goals in 14 appearances for the Green Army and fired them to the brink of promotion.

He failed to fire in the final as Plymouth lost 2-0 to AFC Wimbledon but the 26-year-old, who also had a brief loan spell at League Two club Stevenage, has hinted that he would like to make it a permanent switch when his contract expires.

Matt told the Plymouth Herald earlier this week: “My agent’s looking after things at the minute. I said if Argyle came in and were happy to keep me, it’s something I would seriously consider.

“They’re top of my list, but if I’m honest I told my agent to keep everything away from me because I wanted to focus on these games.

“At the minute, if Argyle came in, that’s the team.

“I’m bitterly disappointed for the (Plymouth) fans and all the support they’ve shown, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time here, it’s been some of the best times I’ve had in football.

“I was at a low point when I came down and the fans made me feel unbelievable. It’s the most welcome I’ve ever felt at a club.

“I’m just desperately gutted I couldn’t return the favour and get promotion for them, because that’s what they deserve.

“It’s good to bottle this hurt up and learn from it, so whenever you’re going through a tough patch next season, you use that hurt to get you through.”

Town have also released 20-year-old Max Cartwright who spent time on-loan at National League North side Chorley and National League side Southport last term.

Keeper Aleks Gogic spent most of the campaign as Maxwell’s No.2 but with the arrival of two new shot-stoppers Chris Neal and Alex Cairns Gogic and Brendan Moore, 24, who ended the season on-loan at National League side Torquay, have been released by the club.

Development squad players Keir Dickson, Bradley Roscoe, Conor Smith, Matty Williams and Harvey Hodd have also been released.

Fleetwood have offered new contracts to Pond, defender Tyler Forbes and young midfielders Jack Sowerby and Thomas Grant.

The club has exercised clauses in midfielder Eggert Jonsson, forward Bobby Grant, striker Ash Hunter, defender Marcus Nilsson and midfielder Nick Haugton’s contracts to extend their stay at Highbury for another year.

Development squad players Keano Deacon, Kieran Dunbar and Akil Wright’s contracts have also been extended.

Dundee based paper the Evening Telegraph claimed Scottish Premiership sides Dundee and St Johnstone had turned down the offer to snap up Jonsson.

But Jonsson’s ex-Hearts team mate and current Town boss Pressley rubbished claims that Jonsson would leave the club to return to Scotland.

He said: “We have got an option on Eggy and he is really happy here.

“He has a clause in his contract for an extension that we have exercised.”

David Ball, full-back Amari’i Bell, striker Devante Cole, defender Joe Davis, full-back Conor McLaughlin, forward Declan McManus, midfielder Victor Nirennold and midfielder Jimmy Ryan are still under contract.
