Potts: Blackpool's five-star show no one-off

The Seasiders ran riot against Scunthorpe at Bloomfield Road, winning 5-0 in a game which cost Iron boss Mark Robins his job.

Potts scored two himself after a barren run of form, but the midfielder says it was Pool’s togetherness which led to the shock result.

He said: “The lads are working more as a team now instead of as individuals.

“When you do that and work your socks off for each other, you are normally rewarded in football.

“The lads knew we needed a big performance. To win was great, but to score five and keep a clean sheet was even better. All the lads were delighted. It was our best performances of the season.”

Pool lost their previous three games and have come in for criticism from supporters and media alike, though the club has always insisted the atmosphere inside the dressing room has been good.

And Potts says he proved as much on Saturday, when the chance to fire a hat-trick came his way late in the game. The former Carlisle man explained: “I know I need to score more and on Saturday I managed to get a couple.

“I could have gone for a hat- trick but I thought I’d set Danny Philliskirk up instead.

“I saw him and knew how much he wanted his first Blackpool goal, so I was over the moon to set him up.”

The result moved Blackpool above Fleetwood (at least until tonight) and Shrewsbury, and out of the relegation zone for the first time in 2016.

And 21-year-old Potts added: “Getting out of the bottom four is the main thing. That’s what we need to concentrate on now – moving up the table.

“My first goal was a really good team move. The second goal I hit early but it went in, so I was so happy.

“We were the lowest-scoring team in League One before the game, so to score five is a real boost. I’m sure winning 5-0 will give us all confidence now going forward.”

This weekend’s test couldn’t be much tougher, away to second-placed Walsall, but Potts thinks the Seasiders can surprise people.

“It will be a hard game, but if we work as hard as we did last Saturday we can get something from it,” he insisted.

“We’ve been really inconsistent this season and we need to improve that. Hopefully we can go to Walsall and get something.”
