Should the clubs vote to play no more regular fixtures and finalise the league table using unweighted points-per-game averages, Wycombe Wanderers would jump five places to third.

The other clubs in the play-off zone would all drop a place, leaving Fleetwood hanging on in sixth and in line to face the Chairboys in the semi-finals.

Even so, the Cod Army’s fate would be in their own hands and captain Coutts says they could focus purely on themselves, though he would regret not being able to push for automatic promotion by playing out their remaining nine fixtures.

The Scot told The Gazette: “I’m not so sure on the whole thing. It would be harsh on Wycombe if they didn’t get in the play-offs with their game in hand, but there isn’t going to be a resolution that satisfies everyone – somebody’s going to be disappointed.

“It’s for the league to decide and for us it’s all right because we’re going to be in it either way.

“We just look at ourselves and know that we’ve got to work hard for what’s to come, whoever we may be playing.

“We were on a good run. The next game we were meant to play was Gillingham (in 11th place), then we had (second-placed) Rotherham coming to our place, which we would have fancied.

“It’s disappointing not to get the opportunity to get into the top two.

“But with it being so tight (only one point separates the six sides between third and eighth), we’d probably take the play-offs now and back ourselve
