Maxwell exits and Pressley set to talk to Town's other out of contract players

Town’s retained list is expected to be revealed next week.

And manager Steven Pressley says he will be meeting up with all the other out-of-contract players later this week to discuss their futures.

The Town boss said: “For a number of our players the last three or four months have been uncertain periods because their contracts run out in the summer.

“I wasn’t in a position until I knew our destiny to have the conversations with them.

“It is absolutely a credit to many of those players the way they have gone about their business because it is not easy at times being a footballer.

“We read all the great stories about the masses of money at the top end of the game but it is not like that in this league. Many of these players are reliant on their weekly wage.

“We showed an unbelievable mentality during this period, so I’d like to say a big thank you to many of those players.

“We were back in on Monday. We talked about the plan for the close season and all the players were given their close- season plans.

“I also want to speak this week to many of my out-of-contract players.

“I will come up and meet them in person and have discussions about the club moving forward.

“It was all about getting through Sunday against Crewe (Fleetwood won to secure their League One status).

“The emotions of the day were draining and I’m really pleased for everybody.”

Centre-half Stephen Jordan, 34, is another out of contract in the summer and Pressley praised the defender.

Both Jordan (blood clot) and Jimmy Ryan (broken toe) trained only on the day before Sunday’s crunch survival clash against Crewe. Both lasted the 90 minutes as Town powered to a 2-0 win thanks to goals from Bobby Grant and Devante Cole.

Pressley said: “The great thing was that Jordan and Ryan managed to train on the Saturday, which we were not sure that they would.

“The truth is that if they hadn’t trained I’d have had a big decision to make because in previous weeks Jimmy hadn’t trained at all. I said last week (after the 3-1 defeat at Walsall) that it had really caught up with him.

“I had a really good conversation with Jimmy during the week. He managed to get himself on the training ground and I’m delighted because he is such a pivotal player.

“I have mentioned that Stephen Jordan is out of contact in the summer and has given his absolute lot to this football club.

“His professionalism has been beyond the call of duty and I’m really pleased for him and Jimmy.”
