Having featured in the Papa John’s Trophy and Carabao Cup at the start of the season, the 20-year-old made his Fleetwood Town league debut against Burton Albion.

In total, he’s made 11 appearances in all competitions for Town this season, bringing him a two-year contract extension until 2023.

“It’s been a good season for me. I’ve made my debut and played a few games,” he said.

“That was my aim at the start so I’m very happy with how it’s going so far for me.

“I got around three seconds that game (Burton). Hull is probably the game I’ll remember more because I started that game but that’s your dream growing up, to make your debut.

“Before the season started, if someone had said I’d make 11 appearances I’d have been delighted but now I’m in, you want more and more.

“I think, as long as you don’t get complacent and you take everything as it comes, it’s a great position to be in.”

Holgate felt he had a chance to stake a claim for a spot in the Fleetwood team coming into the season.

He also spent time on loan at National League club Altrincham, playing twice and making sure he was in a position to step up if required.

He said: “It’s hard when you’ve not got much experience either because that’s what people want.

“It’s about putting yourself in the right positions and taking your chance when you get it.

“With Covid and everything, I knew there wouldn’t be a lot of money to go and buy vast amounts of players so I saw it as a chance to impress in pre-season, be around it at the start and hopefully get my chance.

“Getting those early games in the cup at the start of the season helped, when they did have to put me in, because they knew I could do well and could help the team out.”
