Fleetwood Town head coach Joey Barton leaves with immediate effect

Fleetwood Town head coach Joey Barton has left the club with immediate effect, the club revealed in a short statement.

Barton had been in charge of Town for two-and-a-half seasons, last season leading them into the League One play-offs where they were defeated by Wycombe Wanderers in the semi-final.

The club's statement on his departure simply announced his departure and wished him well, the entire statement consisting of two short sentences.

It is unknown as yet the cause for his departure, six months before his contract was due to run out and right at the start of the January transfer window.

Barton had recently made headlines as he announced post match that Ched Evans would no longer be considered for selection at Town but now the Cod Army will have to begin their search for a new boss.

The club have not announced who will be taking control of team matters for the time being or whether his coaching staff have remained in place.
