Four goals in his last two League One games have made summer signing Camps the first Fleetwood player to reach 10 for the season as the Cod Army prepare for tomorrow’s home clash with Sunderland.

Camps turns 25 on Monday and head coach Barton said of his prolific midfielder: “No doubt we’ll be inundated with people wanting Campsy because it’s very rare you get people of his age to put the ball in the back of the net from the role he’s playing.

“He’ll be the first to praise his team-mates for the quality of chances they are creating for him but we have really lacked that player, a goalscoring midfielder.

“We lost Kyle Dempsey (now at Gillingham), an archetypal number eight. Campsy came in on a free transfer from Rochdale and has been outstanding.”

And Barton feels dedication has been key to Camps’ success, adding: “He came into the building in shape. It would have been easy to let it slide with the lockdown but he didn’t – he came in fit as a fiddle.

“He’d clearly worked incredibly hard in the lockdown period to keep his base level of fitness up and he’s reaping the rewards for that and his level of professsionalism.

“Probably everyone in the division above should have eyes on him because he’s a real talent and we’re pleased to have him in our team.”

And with the return to fitness of Jordan Rossiter and the emergence of Sam Finley, Barton is delighted with the midfield options now available to him.

He added: “We’ve had Paul Coutts, Glenn Whelan and Mark Duffy at times, which is a little bit on the senior citizens’ side, and to have that younger kind of fresh, energetic midfield too is a real bonus.

“But we have great options right across the board, frontline and backline, and we just have to keep working hard, pay our dues every day and see where we can take this.

“I’m very exciting about where the squad and the club is at and looking forward to what the future brings.”
