Fleetwood forward Bobby Grant wants the Pool fans to watch his Crewe goal

Grant’s left-footed rocket in the 2-0 final-day win over Crewe is one of 10 goals that is up for Town’s goal of the season gong.

Before kick-off the two Fylde coast clubs were battling to avoid the final League One relegation space.

With Town two points above the Seasiders and the score locked at 0-0 at Highbury Joe Blyth gave Pool a 1-0 lead in their game at Peterborough United.

But five minutes later the former Blackpool player hit the back of the net at Highbury and Devante Cole made it 2-0 in the 24th minute.

By the time Grant left the field Blackpool were 3-1 down and eventually went on to lose 5-1, crashing back down into the fourth tier of English football.

He was Town’s top scorer this term after making the short move from Blackpool to Highbury last July.

He made only five full appearances for Pool and spent time on loan at Fleetwood and Shrewsbury during his two year spell.

And though he takes no personal pride in seeing the Seasiders suffer their second successive relegation he does want the fans who gave him a tough time during his spell at the club – and who jeered him when he was subbed off in the derby day 0-0 draw last month – to watch his goal against Crewe.

He said: “When I came off Danny the kit man, who again I’d like to thank because he has been great with me, came over and said they are getting beat 3-1 and that gave me a little bit of a buzz that because I didn’t have the best of times there.

“The fans were not great to me there. It is crazy how football works.

“I did not pay too much attention to Blackpool but someone just said ‘how does it feel to help relegate them?’ and I don’t take any personal pride but the way the fans jeered me a couple of weeks ago when I came off the pitch. I’d like them to watch that goal.”

And Grant hailed chairman Andy Pilley as he has overseen a 19-year journey that has seen the club rise from the depths of non-league to now being the club on the Fylde coast playing in the highest league next term.

He said: “The chairman deserves everything he has been absolutely fantastic for all the staff all the players and the club.

“If it were not for him Fleetwood would not be were they are today so, for us to be the top team on the Fylde coast, I think he will take a lot of pride in that and I am over the moon to be a part of that.”

Grant is enjoying some time away from football before getting back to business at the end of this month.

He said: “I always think it is nice to have a couple of weeks where you go away, you switch off from football, you enjoy your time with your family and your friends.

“It is only three weeks that you get off and then we have a programme and we have to get back down to business.

“I will be coming back fit and strong because, next season, I don’t want to be involved in this; I want to be involved in challenging for better honours.”
