Blackpool boss won't rule out rotation if it's required

Neil Critchley insists he’s not afraid to change a winning team if it increases the chances of his Blackpool side claiming another three points.

The Seasiders head to Gillingham this weekend aiming to build on last Saturday’s 2-0 win against Swindon Town.

With James Husband and Sullay Kaikai back from injury, that gives Pool’s head coach some decisions to make over his team selection.

“If I think it will help the team and will give us a better chance of getting a result, then I have no issue with changing the team,” Critchley said.

“It’s that old saying of ‘you don’t change a winning team’, but that means you’re waiting until you get beaten until you change the team.

“I will pick the best team that I think is the one that will give Gillingham the most problems or maybe to nullify a threat they’ve got. Sometimes it’s horses for courses.

“I think it keeps players on their toes and they also know if you’re consistent with that type of approach, it might seem inconsistent but they’ll know there’s some method behind the madness.”

Like Blackpool, Gillingham have begun their league campaign with a defeat and a win, bouncing back from their opening day loss at Hull City to edge out troubled Wigan Athletic last week.

On that result, Critchley added: “Wigan have added one or two players recently and they’ve got some experience in their side. I don’t think Wigan’s situation is quite the same as Bolton last season if you compare the teams, so it was still a very good result for Gillingham.

“You know when you’re going to come up against any Steve Evans team that you’re going to have to do certain things if you want to get a result.

“We know it’s going to be a tough game away from home, they’ve made big changes to their squad and they’ll be wanting to have a successful season themselves.

“Gillingham away is always a tough game, so we’ll have to be fully prepared for what they can bring to the table.”

New signing Luke Garbutt won’t be fit enough to make his debut, while Matty Virtue continues to be assessed.
