Mechanics had Alex Cameron back in goal and gave a debut to Bamber Bridge midfielder Macauley Wilson, who had an outstanding game.

Both sides had chances in a fairly even first half, which the visitors just shaded in terms of openings created.

The stalemate continued until the 68th minute, when Callum Woods’ volley beat the full-stretch Cameron at his far post.

And when Chad Whyte quickly doubled the lead Mechs had a mountain to climb in the final 20 minutes.

They brought on Mark Buchan, Ben Duffield and Ben Fishwick and laid siege to the Ashton goal but couldn’t break through.

Manager Martin Baird took exception to some of the referee’s decisions and was sent to the stands late on after being shown a second yellow card.
