Workers strike gold with charity project

Aerospace workers on the Fylde coast have been recognised for their efforts to help out a Blackpool charity that fell victim to an arson attack.

Engineers at BAE Systems in Warton used advanced manufacturing techniques to restore a carousel belonging to Donna’s Dream House, which supports seriously ill children and their families.

The project was one of four in Lancashire to receive a gold award at the company’s Chairman’s Awards, where they were up against entries from around the world.

The business selected Donna’s Dream House as one of its chosen charities for 2012 and following the arson attack that year set about repairing the carousel.

Sally Topping, a business support engineer who completed her apprenticeship in June, said: “It quickly became apparent that what we thought was a two-week restoration job was more like a five-month one. The only original parts were some of the toys and a few pieces of metalwork, the rest had to be replaced.

“There were times during the project when it felt like it was a million miles away, but the satisfaction of handing it back to Donna’s Dream House made it all worthwhile.

“I took on the role of project managing the team and making sure we had enough people to get the job done was quite a challenge.”
