A suspected gas leak closed a section of Central Drive in Blackpool, with residents urged to find alternative routes.

Police were called to assist Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service following a suspected gas leak in Central Drive on Friday (January 6).

The road was subsequently closed between Havelock Street and Reads Avenue.

Residents were urged to avoid the area while the situation was assessed.

Congestion was building in the surrounding area as motorists attempted to use alternative routes.

A number of bus services – including 5,6,7 and 17 – were also diverted following the closure.

A spokesman for Blackpool Transport said: “These services will be diverting via Chapel Street and the Promenade.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

Blackpool Council thanked residents for their patience as the leak was fixed.

“Please note, Central Drive between Havelock Street and Reads Avenue is closed until further notice due to a gas leak,” a spokesman said.

“Diversions are in place and bus routes amended.

“Thank you for your patience.”
