The closure caused problems for Wigan Athletic supporters travelling to their fixture vs Fleetwood Town via Blackpool.

Fleetwood Town Police tweeted: "Wigan Athletic fans travelling to Highbury today; if you are going to Blackpool first please be aware that due to damage the tram lines are shut north of Uncle Tom's Cabin.

"You will need to catch the Number One and Number 14 buses.

"Our advice is to go straight to Fleetwood."

One Twitter user, @lancstic, said: "Nightmare getting from Blackpool to Fleetwood, no trams and bus took about an hour.

"I suggest getting a taxi."

Another user, Michael Fulton, said: "Trams lines are down at Norbreck Castle for those heading from Blackpool."

At around 4pm Blackpool Transport tweeted: "Tram will now be resuming service to Fleetwood Ferry. Sorry for the inconvenience for any delays."
