PROJECT UPDATE: Devonshire Road bridge works

What’s happening?

A 15-week repair project is underway on Devonshire Road bridge.The work is part of an £11.3m project to upgrade bridges across Blackpool.

What does it mean for motorists?

The council has planned to shut the route to southbound traffic but, in response to a backlash from local businesses who feared losing trade, temporary traffic lights have been put in place for a two week trial.

However, the council has said it may revert back to its original plan if the lights cause traffic problems.

How is it affecting businesses?

Some traders on the busy road say even with a flow of traffic, the disruption has still affected their takings.Michelle Betts, 54, owner of Butty Bar, said takings are down £30 to £40 per day.

She added: “It is definitely quieter and I am managing on my own.”

Julie Buttriss, 47, co-owner of Number 273 The Fishery Fish and Chips, said: “It’s already quieter and it has affected business. We are concerned about the length of time it will take.”

How is it affecting traffic?

Jo Gillespie, 39, manager of florist Scentsations, said she felt the traffic had quietened due to people looking for alternative routes.

She added: “Although it is busy at the key points of the day such as school pick up times the rest of the time the road has been quiet.”

Ms Betts said the traffic was not as busy as she had expected but added: “The traffic is likely to get worse next week when the school holidays are over.”

Hazel Kay, owner of 4U Tanning Shop, said she hopes the traffic lights stay in place.

She added: “The traffic lights are working for me.

“When the traffic stops it is backing up to the shops but once the lights change it soon clears. People are still pulling in to the bays and calling in to the shops.”
