The refuse and recycling centre on Bristol Avenue in Bispham has been shut since March 25 under coronavirus lockdown measures.

Lancashire County Council has also confirmed its 16 tips, including those in Wyre and Fylde, will remain closed during lockdown despite calls from some district councils for them to re-open.

The closures have led to fears of an increase in fly tipping by irresponsible residents wanting to get rid of waste.

Coun Fred Jackson, cabinet member with responsibility for environment, transport and climage change on Blackpool Council, said: “The household waste and recycling centre at Bristol Avenue has been closed in line with government guidance and will remain closed in order for us to limit the spread of coronavirus.

"This protects the community as a whole and our staff. We know how much people value the recycling centre and would like to be able to access it, but it must remain closed for all our safety, unnecessary journeys shouldn’t be made.

"We will review this situation when we receive further guidance from the government."

He urged people to dispose of their household waste responsibly.

Coun Jackson added: “Our household collection service remains largely unchanged, so there is no reason to fly tip.

"We ask that residents keep hold of anything for now that they would normally take to the recycling centre at Bristol Avenue and not leave anything on pavements or back alleys”

Coun Tony Williams, leader of the Conservatives on Blackpool Council, said it was likely residents did have larger quantities of waste to dispose off due to bin collections now being fortnightly.

He said: "Many are reverting to burning this in their back garden areas which is causing separate problems especially in regard to pollution and for those who have asthmatic issues.

"I think the council should be positioning large commercial bins and skips at strategic points around the town so people can get rid of excess rubbish. It would also prevent some fly tipping and general litter."
