Coastguard crews from Lytham were first called to reports of a person walking out towards the sea in the Fairhaven area at around 2.40pm.
When crews arrived they established the call was a "false alarm with good intent" as the person who had been spotted was a fisherman who wasn't in any difficulty.

The team quickly relocated and started a search alongside crews from Lytham St Annes RNLI, who launched their D-class lifeboat.
After searching the area "for a while" police were reportedly content they had searched all the areas they could and all units were stood down.
As they were returning to the station they received reports of a person "lost in the fog" on St Annes beach.
