Three-year-old pup Peggy was on holiday with her owner, Sadie Green, at Brickhouse Cottages in Hambleton when she came across the baited hook, which had been left on the ground, and promptly swallowed it down.

She was rushed to Moy Vets in Hambleton and transferred to the Vets Now emergency hospital in Manchester, where vets spent two days removing the hook from her esophagus.

Sadie, 31, who lives in Evesham, said: “They had to cut open her chest so they could unhook it from her esophagus. She’s got a feeding tube in at the moment. I have to blend all her food and I’m tube-feeding her four times a day.

“Peggy has recovered really well, but she just wants to eat. She’s been a bit depressed. She wants it all to be over as much as I do.”

Peggy now faces another operation to remove her feeding tube, with the total cost of her care adding up to around £5,000.

Sadie, a carer, has now set up an online fund-raiser in the hope of helping her beloved dog - and has already raised £2,200.

She said: “At one point I didn’t think she was going to make it, and I was really quite scared.

“Peggy is such a friendly dog. I take her into work and she’s like a therapy dog. The little girl I care for absolutely adores her.

“I have been overwhelmed with how much has been donated already.

“Peggy means the world to me. It’s just me and her. I'm so used to her following me around the house. I’d just be devastated if I lost her.”
