Macmillan Cancer Support: Four Fylde friends tee up for golf challenge at Blackpool North Shore

The ‘fore-midable’ team consists of Ian Tolley, Neil Thomas, Stuart Fitzpatrick and Carl Cohen, who will play 72 holes in just one day in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

The team, called The Average White Band as they play the song ‘Let’s Go Round Again’ as their theme tune, will take on the challenge at Blackpool North Shore Golf Club on Wednesday August 17.

They will tee-off at 5.30am and expect to complete the four rounds in around 15 hours and will walk more than 25 miles on the day. And, so far, they have already raised £537 towards their £750 target.

Ian Tolley, who lost his mum Rosemary to lung cancer 11 years ago, said: “Everyone will know someone in their lifetime that is faced with illness and might require the amazing support from Macmillan.

“They looked after my mum and were absolute angels. But a lot of our family and friends have been affected by cancer, and they also received fantastic support from Macmillan. So, we thought it was the right thing to do and give something back and help Macmillan support other families affected by cancer.”

This will be the fourth time the team has taken part in the Longest Day Golf Challenge and between them they have raised more than £5,000 so far and they are already planning on tackling the fund raiser again next year.

Ian added: “It’s going to be hard, especially as we’re all getting older, and also a very long day and tiring day, and I’m sure we’ll have sore feet at the end of the challenge. But we also hope to have lots of fun, whilst raising as much money as we can for such a worthwhile cause.”

Macmillan’s Longest Day Golf Challenge, which is now in its 22nd year, encourages teams of mates to play four rounds of golf in 24 hours. And the top four fundraising teams from across the country will get the chance to win a free three-night trip to Portugal to compete for the Longest Day Golf Challenge trophy.
