Pan-tastic fun making Shrove Tuesday treats

The savoury treats will be topped with sugar, lemon juice, and syrup across the Fylde coast today as families enjoy Shrove Tuesday.

The centuries-old tradition takes place on a different date every year but always precedes the first day of Lent – or Ash Wednesday.

Its original purpose was to use up rich, typically luxury foods like eggs and milk before the 40-day fasting season 
begins.

In recent years, toppings have become more and more outlandish, and now include beer, bacon, and Oreos.

Pam Birch, executive principal at Hambleton, in Church Lane. said: “Good learning is always layered; cookery skills, British traditions, RE, teamwork... And of course a heavy dose of having fun!

“That way the memory stays and the learning is ingrained.”
