The 36-year-old was walking along the Promenade, close to Harry Ramsden’s fish and chip shop in Blackpool town centre when he was approached by the group.

He fell to the ground after being punched from behind, police said, and knocked back to the ground after getting up to try to defend himself.

The men – police say there could have been three – continued to rain blows down on their victim as he led on the floor. They took a black Ted Baker wallet with £60 inside before running away at around 1am last Saturday.

The man, from Worthing, was treated by paramedics for minor injuries but did not require hospital treatment, a police spokeswoman said.

Detectives yesterday appealed for information and said they hoped to speak to a somebody they think tried to stop the attack.

Det Con Steve Talbot, of Lancashire Police, said: “We are appealing for witnesses who may have seen this take place on the Promenade.

“The victim states that he thought he heard a voice telling the males to leave him alone and get off him. I would like to appeal to that person to come forward and contact the police with any information they can.”

No descriptions of the men were available.
