Gun amnesty figures adding up for police

The weapons surrender ends this week and officers are already hailing the programme a success.

The latest figures include several weapons handed over in Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre.

Police in Fylde are particularly proud of their haul so far, which includes a shotgun and a wartime service revolver.

A total of 24 air-powered weapons have been handed in including 17 rifles.

Fifteen shotguns have been received by officers at Police stations across the county.

There have also been eight revolvers, three rifles, a stun gun and one crossbow handed over.

Five antique weapons have been handed over to officesr as well as four starting pistols. Officers have also received a large quantity of live ammunition including more than 150 12 gauge shotgun cartridges and several Second World War bullets.

Chief Inspector Mark Baines went online on Monday to discuss the surrender and reassure the public dangerous weapons were being taken off the street.

He said: “Every gun that is handed in can never be stolen and can never be used in crime in Lancashire or elsewhere.”

The amnesty runs until Monday. Weapons can be handed in at any police station.
