Dementia rise sparks £200,000 change at Fylde rest homes group

Lake View Rest Homes is to transform its Lake View Lodge centre to increase beds form 28 to 32 and offer a whole range of facilities and person-centred care to cater for people with the condition.

It will have purpose considered decor, textures, music and lighting, and an activity co-ordinator who provides daily meaningful and relevant activities.

In September its sensory garden will open where purpose built design features will include a colourful circular path, sights and smells which evoke memories of the past, skilled lighting, textures, colours and music to enhance the sensory experience.

Bus-stops and benches will encourage reminiscence, and outdoor activities aim to improve the quality of life for residents.

Director Pete Wood said: “Our family owned and operated homes reflect the differing requirements and preferences of our residents.

“We offer traditional living at Lakeview Lodge, classic living at Rosewood Lodge, contemporary lifestyle in The Moorings; and dementia care at Newfield Lodge.

“However we have seen an increasing need for dementia provision and in response to this Lakewood Lodge is being redesigned as a home providing skilled dementia care.

Ava Makepeace, sales and relationship manager, said: “It is estimated that there are more than 850,000 people with dementia in the UK, with numbers set to rise to over one million by 2025.

“In this year alone some 225,000 individuals will develop dementia – that’s approximately one person every three minutes.

“It is becoming a critically important issue, in terms of both the high personal and social costs related to the disease, and the wider impact on other parts of the health and care system. We are hoping that members of the public will take this opportunity to see the beautiful new rooms that are now available.”

Fellow director Nick Wood, who has been responsible for the design changes said: “The concept behind the Lakeview Lodge transition to dementia care is to use our successful experience with dementia to create both inside and outside sensory stimulation for residents, with an environment and activities to improve their quality of life.”
