But the duo reckoned without a tracker device on the digger and trailer they took, which enabled police to apprehend them soon afterwards.

Michael Brade, 41, of Charnley Road, Blackpool, and Jarrard Jacklin, 21, of Mount Avenue, Lancaster, pleaded guilty to theft.

Jacklin also pleaded guilty to driving a Mitsubishi Shogun while disqualified and without insurance.

Prosecutor, Pam Smith, said: “The Crown say this is high value organised theft of plant equipment.”

On March 14 at 5.40am the site’s owner noticed a digger and trailer were missing from his secure yard at Cockerham Road, Garstang.

He activated the tracker device and told police of the equipment’s whereabouts. Police then stopped Jacklin as he drove a Shogun pulling the trailer with the digger on top in Blackpool’s Mythop Road.

Brade was a passenger in the car.

The defendants were sent for sentence at Preston Crown Court on April 13 by District Judge Jeff Brailsford sitting at Blackpool Magistrates’ Court.
