"The investigation is in its early stages and enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact 101 quoting log number 0358 of January 23."

The statement comes after a police presence at the property over several days since, continuing today, brought widespread speculation on social media, prompting Fylde's neighbourhood policing team to post the following on its Facebook site on Wednesday:

"We are aware that a story is circulating on a local social media site where reference has been made to police activity in the St Annes area.

"The story in circulation refers to a 'drug deal gone wrong' with speculation being made that this has resulted in a murder.

"We would like to reassure you all that this is not the case. We currently have an ongoing investigation into a serious assault with no outside area or organised crime links."
