Michael Hyman, owner of Leonard Dews, formerly of Clifton Street, Lytham, praised officers after Darren Peter Smith, 41, of Irlam Square, Salford, was convicted at Preston Crown Court for his part in a shocking robbery at the store in September 2011.

Mr Hyman said: “I think the police have done a particularly good job. They told me 12 months ago they had arrested him and CCTV played a part.

“He played a key role in the jewellers being robbed.”

Smith, who was jailed on February 5, allowed the entry of three masked, armed men, who smashed displays and stole a number of high value items.

The shop closed in 2012 before being re-branded as Hidden Gem.
