Football club groundsman in car flee shame

A Premier League football club groundsman studying his craft at Myerscough College lost control of his car and crashed through a hedgerow.

Daniel Smith, a groundsman for Stoke City FC, and his passengers then abandoned the car in a field off St Michaels Road, Bilsborrow.

He was tracked down by police to the college and officers questioned him the following morning.

Smith, 19, of Portland Grove, Crewe, pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention.

He was fined £50 with £85 costs, ordered to pay £20 victims’ surcharge and had five motoring penalty points put on his licence by Blackpool magistrates.

Prosecutor, Martine Connah, said police found a Seat Ibiza in a field near Guy’s Thatched Hamlet on November 1 at 7.30am.

Documents in the car referred to Myerscough College and police tracked Smith down there.

Defence lawyer, Tony Birchall, said his client, who had no previous convictions, studied at Myerscough College during the week and worked at the Stoke City ground at weekends. It had been Halloween the evening before the accident and Smith had been the designated driver to take some friends to a club in Preston.

On the way back it was foggy and Smith accepted that although he was not speeding he had taken a bend too fast for the weather conditions and lost control.
