A Fleetwood joiner was arrested after police discovered a cannabis farm hidden in his loft.

Mark McGhee, 38, was charged with cannabis production after officers found the illegal plants while searching his flat in North Albert Street.

The electricity supply had been illegally diverted from the mains to grow the plants inside a tent, said police.

McGhee, now of Langley Lane, Goosnargh, admitted cannabis production and abstracting electricity when he appeared at Blackpool Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday (April 11).

His lawyer Martin Hillson said the offences took place years ago and his client has changed his lifestyle and had been offered a management post on £500 a week.

McGhee was given an eight week jail term for each offence but he was spared prison after his sentences were suspended for 18 months.

He was ordered to complete 200 hours unpaid work and pay £750 in compensation to the energy company.
