Blackpool footbridge 'to be assessed' after concrete falls on to road below

Pictures shared to the Gazette showed clumps of concrete that appeared to have fallen from a footbridge over Bonny Street, Blackpool

Onlookers watched as heavy concrete fell from the bridge, which runs behind the Pump and Truncheon pub and provides a footpath leading from Brunswick Street over Bonny Street and down to Bonny Street car park.

And yesterday, the council closed off the road to address the hazard.

Cllr Jim Hobson, Cabinet member with responsibility for highways, said: “On Saturday we were informed that concrete from Bonny Street bridge had come loose and landed on the road.

“The section of road underneath the bridge was immediately closed to ensure no vehicles or pedestrians could pass underneath.

“Over the next few days, a number of assessments will be carried out to determine what works are needed to make the bridge safe.

“During this time this section of the road will remain closed.

“All businesses can still be accessed as normal from either New Bonny Street or Chapel Street.”
