Blackpool Council has worked with partners to find accommodation which is mainly in town centre b&bs. The town's two night shelters are now closed.

Concerns other North West councils were bringing their homeless populations to the resort have been dismissed - although a handful of people have been housed in Blackpool by neighbouring authorities Fylde and Wyre.

One hotelier, who asked not to be named, said there had been fears of Blackpool taking in homeless people from other north west authorities due to its plentiful supply of guesthouse accommodation.

But a Blackpool Council spokesperson said: “There are a very small number of people who have presented themselves as homeless to our neighbouring authorities on the Fylde coast and, with our full knowledge, are being accommodated in b&bs here for practical reasons.

"Support for this small number of individuals is being provided by our neighbouring Fylde coast authorities.

“There is no suggestion of authorities outside the Fylde coast sending homeless people to Blackpool. They would be legally obliged to inform us if they were attempting to do so.”

Coun Neal Brookes, Blackpool Council cabinet member for housing, said keeping the homeless community indoors would reduce the risk of the virus spreading.

He said: "In addition to the need for food and shelter, the council and its partners are also addressing the complex needs that often go hand in hand with homelessness to protect some of the most vulnerable individuals in our community. "

Smokers are being given nicotine replacement therapy so they are not tempted to go out for cigarettes, while there is also support for those with drug and alcohol addictions.

Much of the work has been co-ordinated by the Blackpool Homeless Partnership and Food Partnership which bring together council services with third sector and voluntary groups.

All accommodation is ensuite with kettles provided so people can self isolate, while food is being delivered by Blackpool soup kitchens with support including from Street Angels, St Michael’s Church, St John’s Church, Hive Cafe, Streetlife and The Albert Project.

Coun Brookes added:  "As a result of the efforts being made by all concerned, individuals have no need to leave their accommodation and be on the streets either asking for support or seeking shelter in these exceptional times."

Outreach support work continues to be available for homeless people who can contact the Housing Options in office hours on 01253 477760 or the Emergency Duty Team (EDT) out of hours on 01253 477600.

Councils have received government funding to provide frontline services including finding accommodation for homeless people.
