£500k hotel investment is '˜just the beginning'

A £500,000 investment in a Blackpool hotel has been unveiled '“ nine months after the owners purchased the business in a £2m deal.

The Seddon family has upgraded 20 bedrooms and transformed the bar and lounge at the Sheraton Hotel on Queens Promenade, North Shore.

They bought the 130-bedroom property last July as a stablemate to their existing hotel the Elgin, also on Queens Promenade.

Directors Liz Brown and Nigel Seddon welcomed 60 guests – including the Mayor and Mayoress of Blackpool Coun Peter Callow and Coun Maxine Callow – to the unveiling.

Mr Seddon said: “In these days of competitive markets, we realise you can’t stand still and you have to keep improving your product and giving guests more and more reasons to come and stay.

“Two years ago we thought long and hard about what we wanted to do next, and we looked at Southport and the Lake District.

“But at the end of the day we chose Blackpool. We love the place and have been in business here 46 years and we thought this is the place for us.

“There is a lot of money about that has apparently been moved off-shore – well we went for North Shore!”

The investment is the first phase of development at both the Sheraton and the Elgin, with planning permission in place for a new cabaret venue at the latter which could eventually be branded a ‘no kids’ hotel, with the Sheraton focusing on the family market.

Mrs Brown said: “Phase one is just the beginning of a major development and refurbishment plan for Hotel Sheraton.

“We wanted to thank everyone involved in the refurbishment to date but more importantly we wanted to showcase the level of quality we have put down as a marker for our future projects.”

Coun Peter Callow praised the family for investing in the town.

He said: “This is not just a fine hotel, it’s a super hotel and this is what we want in Blackpool to draw the customers in.

“At one time, we wanted to be cheap and cheerful, but that’s gone and needs to go.

“That’s why what we are looking at is a class hotel and we are all proud of you.”

Guests also backed the investment.

Jean Finch, from Tyldesley, near Leigh, who stays in Blackpool four or five times a year, said: “The improvements are wonderful. They lighten the place up and everything is brighter.”
