Lauren Yarwood, 38, said she thought her son Riley was "pranking her" when he showed her what had been delivered to the family's home on Thursday (March 4).

Instead of the Vegetable Deluxe burger that an excited Riley had been expecting - which had cost his mum £7 - he found a single cheese slice with some ketchup squirted on it.

"We honestly thought Riley was winding us up, hiding the burger", said Lauren.

"I actually couldn’t believe they had just sent us just cheese in a box."

She soon realised she had made a mistake with her online order - she had meant to order extra cheese and ketchup. But she was left puzzled why staff at McDonald's hadn't thought of calling her to check her order.

She said: "When we rang to complain, they said I had ordered a veggie burger but without the veggie burger and with extra cheese and ketchup

"And they actually sent just the cheese and ketchup."

Lauren joked that "McDonald's ruined our night", leaving "Riley crying" and her husband Dave "stressed out".

But she says she was annoyed that its staff didn't think of getting in touch with her to check her order.

“I honestly have no words,” Miss Yarwood said.

"We are laughing now, but you’d think they’d ring to check and not speak to you like an idiot when you ring to discuss the cheese slice and ketchup in a box that’s just been delivered for £7!"

McDonald's was approached for comment on Monday (March 8) but has yet to respond.
