The school was officially opened by the Katharine, the Duchess of Kent that year. She toured the classrooms and spent time chatting to staff, governors and pupils. This week, we take a look in pictures at some of the other times the Duchess visited the Fylde coast, and her husband, The Duke, Prince Edward – the first cousin of Queen Elizabeth II.Katharine met Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, the eldest son of Prince George, Duke of Kent, and Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark, while he was based at Catterick Camp. The couple made several visits to the area from the 50s to the 80s, spending time at venues including Fleetwood Lifeboat house, Lytham St Annes YMCA, and British Aerospace in Warton.Memory Lane readers made remember the visits, or might have been there at the time and met them. The Duchess of Kent gained attention for her conversion to Catholicism in 1994, the first member of the Royal Family to convert publicly since the passing of the Act of Settlement 1701.
