Valerie Barton, 65, of Inglewood Close in Larkholme, is president of Fleetwood and Cleveleys Lions Club and explained the importance of local charities joining together to help elderly members of the public.

"I can see there will be a really big problem for anyone over 70," she said.

"We need people to help, and although it's great that there are so many individuals offering to, it's important that we make sure those who do are trustworthy.

"Sadly, there are people taking advantage of this situation and scams going round, which elderly people may not realise.

"If we are going to go and do their shopping for them with their money they need to know we are reputable and that's why charities are essential."

Ms Barton, who has been a member of the Lions Club for five years and is in her first year as president, said she hoped that more local charities would contact her to put plans into place.

"Donations of food are also welcome, and we can make sure they go to food banks, she said.

"We want to help those who can't get out on their own, so I'd like any Fylde coast-based charities with able-bodied volunteers willing to help to contact me as soon as possible."

To donate food items, offer help, or ask for help within the Wyre area, Valerie can be contacted on 07923430215 or [email protected].
