What subjects are right for you at sixth form? Blackpool Sixth open days will help you decide – save the dates

Choosing subjects for further study can be difficult for any young student, but this Blackpool Sixth form college has lots of advice – and enjoying what you’re studying is key.

Jon McLeod, Head of Admissions at Blackpool Sixth, said even Year 9 and 10 pupils are advised to look ahead, and for year 11 it is definitely time to consider subjects, and what career goal pupils have in mind.

Balance is the key, he says, choosing subjects that are relevant to the career you have in mind but also subjects you enjoy.

“That often gets missed by parents who want to guide children towards subjects they think will lead to a good job,” said Mr McLeod. “If a student isn’t motivated and engaged in the subject, they are unlikely to succeed. Success is about planning to keep that motivation up right through their school career and to exam time.”

Not all people learn the same

Do you love practical work more than paper exams? Are you naturally academic, do well with studying or prefer a more hands on approach?

According to Blackpool Sixth, A Levels are a good for those who enjoy an academic approach, while BTEC, T Level or other vocational-style courses suit others who like to put the theory into practice.

And Blackpool Sixth has been recognised for its specialism in this sector, receiving the national ‘BTEC College of the Year’ award for the excellence of its vocational provision in 2020. And it is constantly evolving and offering exciting new opportunities. This year Blackpool Sixth is introducing new T Level courses in health (adult nursing) and in digital support and services.

Whether you are on the A Level route, want vocational subjects or want the best of both worlds, you can find a mix that works for you, says Mr McLeod.

Blackpool Sixth, which has an Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ rating, offers a choice of ways to learn. Students can opt to focus on A Levels or vocational qualifications, or a combination of both.

“Our combined programme means students can mix it the way it works. For example, you could do a BTEC in health and social care, but an A Level in another relevant subject, giving you practical and academic learning combined to deliver what you need and want. We can group things together to create unique learning package that works for individual students.”

Think beyond the core subjects

Sixth form is a good time to explore something new, and perhaps try a subject you may never have considered before. With more than 60 to choose from, including textiles, electronics, sport, dance and more, keeping an open mind is the perfect way to approach the open day event.

“Students might combine art, media studies and English language, giving them the chance to go to art school if they want or switch direction and study English or journalism instead. Choosing a range of subjects to keep career options open is the perfect fit for many students,” he added.

Plan ahead and aim high

Whatever route appeals it’s time to start planning for your future now. Look at UCAS and apprenticeship programmes to ensure your subjects are going to get you ready for when your application goes in.

Blackpool Sixth is holding an open day on Saturday, 30th September between 10.30 am and 2.30 pm. Prospective students and their parents/carers will be able to tour the campus and visit all the subjects on offer. They will be able to chat to staff about the courses and find out from current students what it’s like studying at the college. They can also find out about the college’s extensive enrichment programme and even try out the food in our various catering outlets. If you are not able to make this one, the college is holding a second one on Saturday 11th November 2023.
