Improvement noted at out of school club

Months after being branded '˜inadequate' for failing to complete the necessary paperwork, JB's and Earlybirds Out of School Club has been rated as '˜good'.

The club was criticised by education watchdog Ofsted in both October last year and this February after inspectors found forms intended to keep children safe had not been lodged properly, though its quality of teaching was rated ‘good’.

Now, following a follow-up visit, Insp Donna Birch said: “The management team and committee have worked hard to address actions raised at the previous inspections.

“They have ensured that all the committee members have undergone the required checks with Ofsted, and the manager has implemented supervision sessions for all staff.”

The club, based at Baines Endowed School in Thornton, did not intentionally withhold information, Ofsted said late last year, and its staff were praised for being ‘welcoming and enthusiastic’ despite the lapse.

Insp Birch added: “Children enjoy a variety of activities and experiences, delivered by enthusiastic and well qualified staff.

“Children demonstrate their good independence as they select their own toys and equipment.

“Staff talk with children as they play and ask them questions.

“This contributes to children being articulate and confident communicators.”
