Sir Tom Jones was today named as the headline star of next year’s Lytham Proms.

The Welsh superstar, who has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, said: “I’m absolutely delighted to be performing at Lytham Proms. It promises to be a really special occasion and it’s great to be returning to the Fylde coast.

“It’s been a long time coming and we’re all going to have a fantastic night.”

Sir Tom will perform on Saturday, August 2.

Promoters Cuffe and Taylor, who launched Lytham Proms in 2009, are delighted to bring a national treasure to town.

Peter Taylor said: “It is a terrific way to mark what will be the fifth anniversary of Lytham proms because Tom is an absolute international music legend.

“It’s a great coup for the festival weekend and we’ll be announcing more great acts in the New Year.

“We are very excited, not only by Tom’s appearance on the festival stage, but by the whole 2014 package we are putting together.”

The 2014 Proms Weekend will run from August 1-3 and Sir Tom’s appearance on the Saturday night continues the tradition of top music stars appearing on Lytham Green.

Past headliners at the festival, which has become Lancashire’s largest live music event, and attracts tens of thousands of spectators every year, include Status Quo, Olly Murs, Alfie Boe, Rita Ora and Boyzone,

The 2014 event will follow a slightly different format, with the ‘Last Night of the Proms’ concert – which has previously featured singing stars such as Katherine Jenkins and Russell Watson – moving to the Sunday evening.

Explaining the change, Mr Taylor said: “We felt it more fitting to have a spectacular firework display on the final evening to make it an extra special finale.”
