And while the rain poured, secretary of the carnival Ann Hanvey couldn’t have been happier with the turnout.

“Considering the dreadful weather it was brilliant. All the schools, youth organisations and neighbouring queens still came out,” Ann said.

“Everyone had worked so hard on the floats. It was amazing.”

The day saw the crowning of 11-year-old Carnival Queen Rhiana Gleave, with the Cardinal Allen RC High School student crowned at 11am in the Marine Gardens.

At midday fancy dress judging took place along with judging of the parade’s floats before the parade took to the streets from 1pm.

The carnival also welcomed Thornton Queen Aimee Hudson and princess Megan Hudson.

Following the parade the Marine Gardens hosted a fun day including craft stalls, face painting and a range of appetising food stalls.

The day has been running in the town for more than a century thanks to groups of hardworking volunteers.
