All Blackpool's major attractions now closed and 2020 season launch postponed

All of Blackpool's major attractions have now been shut in line with the UK's stringent measures to encourage communities to obey social distancing rules to prevent the rapid spread of the Covid-19 disease.

Following the move of the resort's theatres early last week Blackpool Pleasure Beach and Blackpool Tower have closed temporarily.

Blackpool Zoo and Sandcastle Waterpark also informed visitors via their website and social media channels they would not be open until further notice.

It comes as hundreds of people in the town were pictured defiantly using tourist destinations, such as the beaches in large groups, over the weekend.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has urged people to follow guidelines but is under mounting pressure to impose a full country lockdown.

In a final warning last night said there was 'no doubt' he would take further draconian action, if required.

The highly anticipated annual Season Launch at the Pleasure Beach Globe Theatre, which was due to take place tomorrow will not go ahead.

Organisers Blackpool Pleasure Beach and Visit Blackpool announced the event would be postponed, with a new date to be confirmed.

In a statement the teams stressed it would be a 'temporary measure.'

"We wish you all the very best in these constant changing and challenging times and would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support and look forward to sharing information about a revised date with you in the near future."
