A Fylde cricketer was celebrating today after being selected to make his county debut for Lancashire.

Toby Lester, 22, from Poulton, was picked for Lancashire’s LV= County Championship game against Essex at Old Trafford.

It marks an incredible rise for the former Baines High School student who just five years ago was playing for Fylde CC second team in the Palace Shield.

Toby won a scholarship at Rossall School before studying at Loughborough University where he became the side’s all time wicket taker with 114 wickets while studying Sports Science.

He played against Lancashire for Loughborough on two occasions, impressing selectors, before playing for Lancashire’s Second XI towards the end of last season and the first half of 2015.

He took nine wickets in the Second XI’s recent clash with Northants, earning his call up to the senior side.

Lancashire CCC tweeted: “Congratulations to Toby Lester @lobytester who is making his @LancsCCC first-class debut today #LanvEsx”

A second tweet added: “22-year-old Toby Lester is left-arm fast-medium bowler &left-hand batsman from Blackpool. Becomes 666th first-class cricketer for @LancsCCC”

His brother Ben posted on Facebook: “My brother Toby Lester will make his Lancashire County Cricket Club First XI debut in about 15 minutes time. So proud of him.”

Lancashire won the toss and decided to bat.
