Wes Burns makes most of return to Fleetwood Town side and looks forward to Lincoln test

Burns certainly made his presence felt at Highbury, scoring a superb equaliser, coming close to a second and then winning the penalty which teammate Josh Morris had saved.

Having come off the bench in Town's previous two games after recovering from a calf problem, the 26-year-old was back in his familiar role on the right.

And he said of the wing-back berth: "it's probably one of my strongest positions because it allows me to get forward and do the defensive side.

"And with the personnel we've got in the dressing room it suits us to play three at the back. The position gives me freedom to get forward and most of the time I'm attacking rather than defending, so it's good for me.

"When you have two teams playing the same formation it's basically one v one, so as long as you get the better of your man it does open up a lot of space for you.

"When you are the other side of your wing-back and running at a centre-half in my channel, it's probably a dream scenario for me so I enjoyed it today."

It was Burns' first start since the Papa John's Trophy tie at Hull City on January 12 and the Welshman has now scored on his last three starts.

Burns said of his equaliser, scored from a tight angle barely 90 seconds after Adam Phillips had given Stanley the lead: "The keeper was probably half-thinking I was going to cross the ball, so it was a split-second decision and I've decided I'm going to hit this as hard as I can and hope for the best.

"He's got a hand on it but palmed it in the goal, so I'll take that."

The Welshman felt Town should have gone on to take all three points, not least after winning that 79th-minute penalty.

"It was a good performance and I thought we did enough to win the game," he added. "Their keeper has pulled off a good save from Josh's penalty. We have probably created the better chances in the game and so were unlucky not to win.

"it's kind of been the story of our season that we've made mistakes, but they have scored an unbelievable goal so sometimes you just have to hold your hand up.

"But the lads have shown character on numerous occasions this season to come back from one or two goals down and have done it again.

"Everyone is disappointed when you don't score a penalty, especially when it would probably have won us the game. But everyone makes mistakes and you just have to go again on Tuesday."

Tuesday brings a visit to second-placed Lincoln City and Burns is relishing the challenge.

He said: "They are up there and probably fighting for the top two. They will be a solid team as Michael Appleton's teams always are.

"They will be a good footballing side, so we just have to go there and be resolute like we were on Saturday.

"We don't concede many, so we just have to do more of that on Tuesday and hopefully we can snatch and grab.

"They are sitting at the top but if you turn up on the day at your best then anyone can beat anyone in this league. We'll keep plugging away and there are still plenty of games to go."
