We should have finished job off says Fleetwood boss Sheridan

Town were heading towards a historic first victory over the Seasiders until the 88th minute.

Wes Burns scored Fleetwood’s first-ever league goal against their neighbours for a 75th-minute lead.

Sheridan felt the substitute should have added to his tally moments later, when he fired wide. And Town paid the price for not doubling their lead as two goals in the final six minutes won it for the hosts.

Sheridan was not happy with the Blackpool goals and blamed bad game-management for the defeat.

And he wants his men to learn from it as they prepare to host League One leaders Wigan on Saturday.

The head coach said: “The first half was not a great game. The pitch was difficult. I felt the substitutions livened us up a bit but Wes has got to score.

“It is a massive chance for us and it would have seen the game off but it was not to be.

“I don’t have to watch their goals again because I know what happened. They are very poor goals on our part and hopefully we learn from that.”

“I can only shout from the side of the pitch. Out there they (the players) make the decisions.

“It happens quickly for them but (matchwinner Armand) Gnanduillet has brought the ball down and passed the ball, then got on the end of the cross for the second goal.

“You can’t stand off people and allow them to play, and we paid the price.

“I’m talking about how we lost the game when I really should be talking about how we saw it through and got a good result.

“We have to take it on the chin and move on.

“It is about people on the pitch knowing how to see the game through and that is the biggest downer for us because we didn’t do it.”

Sheridan revealed he was “gutted” at not sending the 1,000-plus travelling Cod Army home with at least a draw.

He added: “I thought the supporters were brilliant. We threw the game away at the end of the day.”

The Cod Army broke out into applause in the 35th minute to celebrate the life of Fleetwood fan Barney Woolcock, who had lost his battle with cancer the previous day.

Sheridan paid his respects and said: “You don’t want anyone to lose a life. It is a sad occasion and I’m sure he’d have loved to have been at the game.

“You don’t want that to happen to anyone.”
