Blackpool and District Youth League match of the week: Poulton Town and Layton C...

It was a high-quality encounter and more keenly contested than the scoreline may suggest, though the home side took a grip on proceedings with three goals before half-time.

Dan Knight broke the deadlock after a tight opening 20 minutes, then further goals by Louis Spencer and Tom Gannon put Poulton in control.

Wyre tightened up again in the second half and became the first team to score against Poulton this season – a fine strike by Oliver Broughton.

Poulton had the final say as captain Dan Reece restored their three-goal advantage, drilling home a free-kick from just outside the penalty area to consign Wyre to a first defeat since the season restarted.

Defender Robert Job was named Poulton’s man of the match for his strong and consistent performance, as well as his communication and reading of the game. Ethan Hayes was the Wyre choice for an outstanding all-round display.

Poulton boss Phil Ashworth told The Gazette: “It was a really good game. We made a change in the first half because things weren’t happening and we scored instantaneously.

“We got two more fairly quickly but the second half was tight again. Wyre played really well and have some strong, pacy players. It was a good game to watch but it was our day, not theirs.”

Wyre manager Mike Ward’s side now move into the Hogan Plate and he said: “We had just as much of the game and I couldn’t fault my lads. It’s great to have everyone back playing. We’ve had two good victories in the league and our confidence is still high. We look forward to the rest of the league season and wish Poulton all the best in the cup.”

Poulton face St Annes Diamonds in the second round this weekend.

The tight league match between St Annes Yellows and Poulton Town was a tale of two penalties, Town missing one before the Yellows sealed victory from the spot. Scorers for St Annes were Elliot Collings and Lewis Hiley (2).
