Jamille Matt takes on a new role on his long-awaited return from injury – he is Fleetwood Town’s most senior striker.
The 24-year-old missed the whole of the last campaign after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in the final minute of Town’s final pre-season game.
But after signing a new one-year deal in the summer, he’s back fully fit and ready to be the club’s senior forward.
Jamie Proctor (23) is joined by Declan McManus (21) and Vamara Sanogo (20) as the Cod Army’s strikeforce, meaning a little more responsibility for Matt.
He said: “At 23 and 24, Jamie and I are the senior strikers, which is a bit weird.
“We have four strikers at the club now and the good thing is that we are all different.
“We can all do different things and I think that will be a good thing as we can all compliment each other.”
It’s been a long road back for the former Kidderminster man, who fired 11 goals in 25 starts during his first season at Highbury. And after a frustrating second season, he’s hoping to make his mark at the club in League One.
Matt added: “I think I have things to prove this season, to myself and the manager.
“What’s happened in the past is in the past now.
“I’ve played in League Two and I can’t wait to get my chance to prove myself in League One.
“I had to write off last season. It wasn’t really a season for me.
“I’m looking forward to getting some more minutes under my belt and hopefully that will come tomorrow night.
“I feel good at the moment and hopefully I’ll get stronger all the time.”
Matt will complete his pre-season programme tomorrow night, when La Liga side Getafe visit Highbury.
Town are yet to record victory this summer but Matt feels preparations for the new season have been superb.
“It’s been a testing pre-season but it’s been good for us,” he explained.
“We will take things from all the games and we’ll hopefully be up to speed quicker.
“It will be another good test tomorrow but a different one.
“We can see how we adapt to play against a totally different style”
Former Morecambe keeper Andreas Arestidou is on trial at Fleetwood Town, having been released by the Shrimps this summer.
The 25-year-old was on the bench for Tuesday’s defeat against Burnley as Graham Alexander casts an eye over the former Blackburn, Shrewsbury and Preston man.
