It’s been a long time out on the sidelines for striker Jamille Matt.

But the Fleetwood frontman is finally nearing the end of the road to a return to first- team action.

The former Kidderminster man broke a bone in his ankle in the victory at York City back in October.

He spent two months with his leg in a special medical boot but is now back on grass and working towards full fitness

“I’m nearing a return,” said Matt. “I’ve been out on the training pitch, working hard.

“I’m blowing a bit, but I’ve got my fitness up and I’m just taking it bit by bit.

“Each time I’m getting a bit closer.”

It could be a good time for the striker to return to first- team contention, with the business end of the season approaching.

And despite a setback against York last Saturday, Matt believes he could be rejoining the squad in time for a promotion push.

“It’s a long season and you’re not going to win every game,” he said.

“But we want to kick on and keep it going.

“I really think we can go from strength to strength and push for that top three.”

Not that winning his place back will be easy.

Jon Parkin and David Ball are both in good form and on-loan Sunderland striker Mikael Mandron has impressed since arriving at Highbury.

Not that the goals from his strike partners are seen as a threat by the 23-year-old.

He said: “I’ve probably been the first jumping up in the crowd when they’ve scored because I want to see the lads doing well.

“I think if I can get back to the kind of fitness levels I had before, I can push for a start but it’s going to be hard.”

n Midfielder Matty Blair has returned to Fleetwood early from his loan spell at Northampton Town due to an ankle injury.
