And he was unstinting in his praise of his players’ efforts to stay focused - rather than already be considering any stay-cations! - as they responded positively to losses against leaders Hull City and Crewe Alexandra.

“We asked the players before the game to treat the match as though it was the first of the season,” said Grayson after the Cod Army completed a League One double over their out-of-sorts hosts.

“It is difficult to do that when there are only two weeks to go and four games left but our mental approach was fantastic.

“We have a good, professional group, who drive each other along.

"And when you get results like this one, it shows football is sometimes about how you approach games, not totally what you can do with the ball.

“I have high standards of them, and we lost two games on the bounce we probably shouldn’t have done. And I didn’t want to lose three games as a manager.

“We had been hurt by the previous two results but we have responded well, with a clean sheet and overall a really pleasing performance.

“We have got three games to go and we have challenged the players to make sure we are unbeaten at the end of the season.

“You don’t want the season to be a damp squib and just peter out and lose momentum.

"We want to finish high up the table because if you do that you attract better quality players in the summer.

"I want people to be talking about this club as wanting to be challenging for the play-offs next season. They sampled it last year and unfortunately lost in the semi-finals.

“This season hasn’t worked out like everyone wanted but the aim is to be around the play-offs come this time next year.”
