Speaking ahead of Tuesday's third successive victory over Gillingham, Grayson said: “We have players desperate to get in the side but also players who have done well in the last few games desperate to keep the shirts.

“We’re just wanting to do as well as we can because a lot of players are playing for the future and I’m playing for my future because I want to be here next season.

“It sums up the division that anyone can beat anybody on any day, and the games come so thick and fast that squads get tested.”

One feature of Grayson’s reign so far is that everyone is considered for selection.

Whether in the 18 from one game to the next or not, each player has a chance.

He said: “We’ve got a decent squad available and a few lads at home who would be in and around quite a few League One squads, so it’s promising.

“It’s a tight division with a lot of teams contending for the top half and a lot that could still be dragged into the bottom four, so that’s why it’s so competitive.

“The financial situation will play a big part this summer because a lot of clubs have lost a lot of money. And a lot of players who are out of contract have to make sure they are doing well, because if they aren’t, they may not be in work come July or August.”
