Simon Grayson aims to build on best Fleetwood display yet when Town take on Burton Albion

Barrie McKay scored the only goal as Town completed a double over Doncaster Rovers on Saturday and delighted their head coach.

Grayson said: “It was a really good professional performance. We were down to the bare bones in the squad but we limited Doncaster to very few opportunities.

“The only criticism I’ve got is that we didn’t score a few more goals. We said that if we showed the right attitude we’d have a really good chance of winning and we did, so I’m really pleased.

“It was probably the best we’ve played in terms of how comfortably we were defensively and how we’ve attacked.

“We still want to be more ruthless and put teams to bed so we can relax, but the attitude was spot on and that is what won us the game.

“Doncaster were at the top end of the division for a long time and still have players to hurt you if you give them room and time to play.”

Defensive resilience has been the cornerstone of the 51-year-old’s time at Highbury and only leaders Hull City have conceded fewer goals than Town.

Grayson added: “It’s another clean sheet and we’ve been good in that department recently. We have a hunger and desire to keep clean sheets.

“You find with a lot of modern defenders that they get satisfaction from assists and like to be playing out from the back as ball-playing centre-backs, but our lot take great pride in keeping clean sheets and putting bodies on the line.

“And if they can play as well, like I know they can, you have a good combination. But it’s the attitude and desire to do it, and we have it in abundance.

“Now we prepare for Tuesday, when we want the same sort of performance. It’s a different type of challenge against Burton but we want the same hunger, desire and quality on the ball.”

Victory over the Brewers in this season’s final midweek game (7pm) could lift Town into the top half of the table.
