Fleetwood Town have made a seventh summer signing by bringing experienced defender Mark Roberts to Highbury.

The 29-year-old joins from League One Stevenage Borough were he clocked-up just under 200 appearances since initially joining on loan in 2008.

The central defender is a graduate of the renowned Crewe Alexandra academy and included hometown side Northwich Victoria on his playing CV before helping Borough to double promotions.

The defender will return to Northwich with the Town squad for a pre-season friendly tomorrow.

He said:“I was massively impressed with this club from the first moment.

“Joining Fleetwood is an exciting prospect and I jumped at the chance after seeing the plans and hearing the chairman’s vision.”

And he’s looking forward to heading straight back home

“It’s bizarre how football turns out sometimes,” said Roberts.

I grew-up in Northwich and they were the first team I ever played for as a 10-year-old. I’m sure a great deal has changed but it will be good to go back.”

Roberts has also turned his hand briefly to management when appointed caretaker manager at Stevenage in January 2012 and March 2013. The former Stevenage skipper has no regrets about switching back to League Two.

“I’m an ambitious person and an ambitious player.

“The manager and chairman have shown me this club is geared to success and I want to play my role in that success with Fleetwood Town.”

The defender was a free agent after rejecting a new contract at Broadhall Way.
